Video surveillance of tenant’s front door being investigated

The Swedish DPA, Datainspektionen, has initiated an investigation of a housing company following a complaint from a tenant.

The tenant claims that the housing company has installed a surveillance camera in a stairway pointing directly at the tenant’s front door. In general, there must be significant reasons why a housing company should set up a surveillance camera in a way that allows for identification of a resident and the conduct of any visitors.

As a result, Datainspektionen has notified an inspection of the housing company to examine how the current camera is used, and which lawful basis for processing the housing company relies on to justify the surveillance; for example, the provision for balancing of interests or, for example, as some contractual compliance of general interest.
