Member Focus: William H. Shawn of ShawnCoulson

What are the most enjoyable aspects of your job? It’s undoubtedly the people. I’m blessed with a chance to work and collaborate with the brightest, most interesting colleagues and clients around the world as we surmount all manner of challenges and fashion truly innovative and creative solutions.
What about your job didn’t you expect before you started? It’s been a few years since I started my law practice, but I seem to recall I never expected such an interesting and diverse worldwide clientele and colleagues with whom I work and have developed long-lasting friendships. We professionals have common interests and bonds that readily leap all manner of cultural impediments even when we may represent opposing interests.
If you had not decided to become a lawyer, what career would you have chosen? I would have become a professional surfer. When during university I announced my intention to leave school and join an early version of the world tour, my father, a career fighter pilot, abruptly countermanded my plans. I sense things developed well nonetheless.
If you could try any job for a week, what would you do? I’d take the U.S. presidency. Given the calibre of candidates we’ve seen lately, it can’t be all that hard, and there’s still much to be done to improve the country. And it would be great fun to fly Air Force One about.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working? Next to spending time with my beautiful wife, I love all manner of automobile events, including racing, rallies, exhibitions, and simply driving fantastic cars, most of which I manage to share with my wife and large family of automotive fanatics.
