Sea employment takes place when the seafarer participates as member of an organised crew during a
vessel’s voyages. Actual sailing is not required as long as the maritime mission of the vessel is maintained.
However, where the employment concerns work while the vessel is idle or laid up, this is considered
to be land employment.

NOTE: When the seafarer is member of an organised crew, it is irrelevant whether the work offered is
purely maritime or not, it is sea employment. Further, a seafarer employed as a crew member has sea
employment, but if the vessel is laid up and he continues to offer services, his work becomes land
