Current Measures to Protect against Ambush Marketing in Brazil

The Confederations Cup recently hosted in Brazil served as a preview of the illegal practice of ambush marketing that trademark titleholders and sponsors may face during the sporting events set to take place here in the near future – World Cup 2014 and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

In a recent lecture held during the Annual Congress of the Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property (ABPI), during which our partner Paulo Parente presented about ambush marketing, FIFA’s representative reported that they had encountered approximately 618 infringement cases, including those involving ambush marketing. FIFA has since reported that those cases have been amicably settled.
