World IP Day Reminds Us the Role Innovation will Play in a World Changed by Pandemic
Sunday marked World Intellectual Property (IP) Day. Designated in 2000 by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), World IP Day educates the public about the role of IP in innovation and creativity. Normally, WIPO would host physical events around the globe to celebrate the day, but due to COVID-19 and necessary social distancing efforts, World IP Day 2020 will be virtual at a time when it is particularly relevant.
As the world adapts to life with COVID-19, IP will be central to addressing this public health threat. As more of the population becomes infected and the virus mutates, we will require new methods of prevention and intervention. As we try to stay farther apart, we will continue to need new tools to stay connected otherwise, be it for conducting work or our personal lives. And as the supply chain slowly rebounds from unprecedented demand for products like hand sanitizer and face masks, we will need new products to replace those that are unavailable and even better ones to keep us healthier.
We hope you and your family are safe and healthy during this time, and if you or a loved one has been personally affected by the virus, we offer our sympathy. As humans, it is in our nature to search for silver linings in times of difficulty. For those of us who work with IP, the period of reinvention to come is one such bright light.
