David C. Codell and Steven Madoff recently joined Bona Law. Between them, they bring over sixty years of experience in Media and Entertainment Law counseling on IP and antitrust issues, among others, handling business and appellate litigation, counseling, and transactions.
Codell—who is a high-honors graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School and a former law clerk for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge David S. Tatel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit—has represented major clients in the television, motion picture, recording and advertising industries in profit participation, First Amendment, copyright, antipiracy, internet, idea origination, defamation, rights of publicity, employment discrimination, and insurance matters, among others. He has over 20 years of experience as a trial-court and appellate lawyer in business law, with expertise in antitrust, class actions, constitutional law, employment law, securities law, and arbitration.
Codell previously had his own law practice after being a partner at Irell & Manella LLP and practicing constitutional law with Harvard Law Professor Laurence H. Tribe. David has also secured ground-breaking historic rulings on important civil rights matters on behalf of individuals and organizations.
Madoff was formerly Executive Vice President of Worldwide Business & Legal Affairs for Paramount Pictures’ Pay Television, Home Entertainment and Digital Media divisions. At Paramount for 20 years, Madoff handled all antitrust and competition matters for his business units, supervised all litigation and was in charge of his divisions’ transactional matters, including joint venture formation, cable channel launches and operation, and all domestic and international long-term television and digital media output deals. He was also General Counsel of Paramount’s Home Entertainment subsidiary. In addition, Madoff has represented numerous other major entertainment companies on matters ranging from profit participation disputes, digital media issues and copyright law. Before his tenure at Paramount, Madoff was International Counsel for the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. the trade association representing all major motion picture studios at the time.
