The Law Reform Commission (“LRC”) proposed changes to the sexual offences laws and at a press conference announced a range of recommendations, including changing the definition of sexual offences as gender neutral and bringing legislation in line with the digital age.
Our partner Andrew Powner, a member of the LRC subcommittee, said in the press conference that, “It is a matter of the law catching up with technology.” The speakers in the press conference were Peter Duncan QC of Plowman’s Chambers and Mr. Eric Cheung (Principal Lecturer and Director of Faculty of Law, University of Hong Kong).
The LRC also proposed a new crime of sexual grooming of children and recommended an equal age of consent regardless of gender or sexual orientation. For details of the report, please click here.
