Is there a waiting period for women to remarry after a divorce?

Even as Japan strives for greater sexual equality some laws still remain on the books that disadvantage women. In Japan, a woman must wait six months after the end of her previous marriage before she can remarry. This applies whether it was the husband or the wife who petitioned for divorce. However, if the woman becomes pregnant before the end of her previous marriage, the six month waiting period does not apply. There is no equivalent law for men.
