Colin Ng & Partners LLP (“CNP”) has entered into an agreement to form a strategic association with leading Myanmar law firm, Fame Myanmar Co Ltd (“FM”). The association will leverage on the relevant capabilities and resources of both law firms.
CNP recognizes the economic potential of Myanmar, and the steady increase in foreign investment into the country ever since the new foreign investment law was enacted by the Myanmar government on 2 November 2012. With a population of over 60 million people, significant natural resources and a strategic location in the heart of Asia between India and China, Myanmar is widely regarded as the last sizeable economy in Asia that remains markedly underdeveloped and untapped.
In 2013, CNP acted for Alliance Brewery Company Limited in its joint venture with Asia Pacific Breweries Limited – a subsidiary of Heineken N.V., to build and operate a brewery in Myanmar. CNP has also acted for several Singapore companies in joint ventures and other commercial transactions with Myanmar entities in recent years.
The strategic association would provide both CNP and FM with greater opportunities to work on a whole range of cross border transactions, and to better cater to the needs of their respective client bases. “CNP welcomes the opportunity to share and tap on the expertise and experience of FM in relation to transactions in Myanmar, as part of the firm’s regionalization drive”, said Lisa Theng, Joint Managing Partner of CNP. “With reforms in Myanmar gathering pace, some of our clients are increasingly interested in looking to Myanmar to increase their investment portfolios.
