Chancellor’s update: Job Retention Scheme applications portal
When the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, led the Downing Street Coronavirus briefing on Tuesday afternoon, he took the opportunity to reassure the public that although the scale of what the UK currently faced would have ‘serious implications’ for the economy, he said that he believed that the planned economic response is ‘protecting millions of jobs, businesses, self-employed people, charities and households’.
Mr Sunak also confirmed that the new portal to process Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme applications will be open on Monday (20 April) and that payments – if applications are made promptly – will be available within days, not weeks. This is good news and means that businesses should have the funds in place by the April payrun – if they apply quickly.
The scheme although, in principle, is simple has many complexities and therefore we have already been assisting our clients in considering how they will quantify and calculate their claims.
